WHEN TO REPAINT

Signs Your Stucco Is Ready for a Repaint

Stucco paint wears out in a few predictable ways. If you're seeing two or more of these, it's a good time for a written estimate.

01

Chalky Residue

Run your hand across a sunny wall. A powdery film on your palm means the paint is breaking down and the wall needs a proper wash and repaint.

02

Hairline Cracks

Thin cracks are common as stucco settles and moves. Left open, they let water in behind the paint. Hairline cracks can be filled and blended before painting.

03

Faded West and South Walls

The sides that take the afternoon sun usually fade first. A wall that's noticeably lighter than the one around the corner means the finish is wearing thin.

04

White Mineral Staining

Chalky white streaks, called efflorescence, come from moisture moving through the stucco. They need to be cleaned off and the cause checked before painting.

05

Peeling at Trim and Edges

Paint lifting where stucco meets windows, doors and trim usually points to failed caulk or moisture getting into those joints.

06

Stains That Come Back

Dark streaks under eaves and on shaded walls often wash off. When they keep returning soon after cleaning, the paint film is no longer doing its job.

OUR STUCCO PROCESS

How We Prep and Paint Stucco

Every stucco repaint follows the same written standard, so you know exactly what’s being done to your walls.

STEP 01

Low-Pressure Wash

We clean the walls with low pressure and a mild cleaner. High pressure can gouge stucco and drive water into it.

STEP 02

A Full Dry Day

Stucco holds water, so the walls get at least a full day to dry before any primer or paint goes on.

STEP 03

Hairline Crack Repair

Hairline cracks are filled with a paintable elastomeric patch or caulk, then the texture is blended so repairs are less noticeable.

STEP 04

Mineral Stain Cleanup

White mineral staining is scrubbed off and those areas are primed. If it keeps coming back, we flag the moisture problem before painting.

STEP 05

Spot Priming

Repaired cracks, cleaned stains and bare spots get a Sherwin-Williams® masonry primer before the finish coats.

STEP 06

Spray and Back-Roll

Paint is sprayed, then back-rolled to work it into the texture, followed by a second finish coat.

Repair work vs. paint work

Wider cracks, loose or hollow-sounding stucco, and missing or damaged stucco are repair work, not painting. We point them out on your estimate and recommend a stucco contractor. Repaired hairline cracks can still show through new paint and may reopen as stucco moves.

STUCCO COST

What a Stucco Repaint Costs

Start with the ranges by home size in our San Antonio exterior cost guide. On stucco, these four things move the price the most.

Texture

Heavier textures like Spanish lace or knockdown soak up more paint and take longer to back-roll than smooth or sand finishes.

Crack Repair

A few hairline cracks are part of standard prep. Walls with many cracks take more patching and blending time.

Wall Height

Two-story walls, tall gables and steep slopes need more ladder work and setup than a one-story home.

Color Change

Keeping a similar color is the simplest repaint. A big change, especially dark to light, can take extra coverage.

Can you paint over stucco cracks?

Hairline cracks, yes. We fill them with a paintable elastomeric patch or caulk and blend the texture before priming and painting. Repaired cracks can still show through new paint and may reopen as the stucco moves. Wider cracks, stair-step cracks and cracks that keep growing can point to movement or moisture problems, so we note them on your estimate and recommend a stucco contractor.

Do I need elastomeric paint on stucco?

Not for a typical repaint. Elastomeric coatings are a thick specialty system meant for walls with widespread cracking, and they come with tradeoffs in cost, color choices and sheen. We don't apply them. Our stucco repaints use Sherwin-Williams® exterior paint over repaired and primed walls. If your home looks like a candidate for an elastomeric system, we'll tell you.

Should stucco be pressure washed before painting?

It should be cleaned, but gently. We use low pressure with a mild cleaner, because high pressure can gouge the surface and push water into the stucco. The walls then get at least a full day to dry before any primer or paint goes on.

Can I change my stucco color?

Yes. Most color changes are a normal repaint. Going from a dark color to a much lighter one can take extra coverage, and if your home needs it, it's spelled out in your written scope before you sign.

How long does a stucco repaint take?

Most one-story homes take about 3–4 working days on site and two-story homes about 4–6, including a dry day after washing, plus any weather days. You'll get a start-to-finish schedule with your proposal.

How much does it cost to paint a stucco house?

Start with the ranges by home size in our San Antonio exterior painting cost guide. On stucco, texture, crack repair, wall height and color change move the price the most, and heavier textures take more paint. Your exact number comes from a free on-site estimate with a written, itemized scope.
